Wealth management is the one skill for which I am most confident. My mom is an accountant, and as soon as I was able to count to three, she be   z   gan instilling into me a sense of financial responsibility and management. In elementary I saved my allowance in a jar, and starting in Junior High I began doing my own record keeping. By the time I entered college I had kept my books the same way my mother had.
After entering   XXX University   , I chose to major in Registered Assets Assessment since I was good at managing money. Despite not majoring in accounting, I completed several accounting courses and studied independently, often asking my professors for academic enquiries. As my habit and confidence in book keeping developed into an academic interest which soon blossomed into a passion, I knew that I wanted to make a career out of it. To prove to myself that I could actually realize this desire, I challenged myself to independently study for the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Qualifications. To this date, I have already passed five of the fundamental examinations, from F1 to F5.
Through studying for the ACCA Qualifications I gained a fair academic grasp of the main duties and responsibilities of the accountant as well as the fundamental theories that accountancy is based on. To further enhance my knowledge in the field, I applied for and was offered a place at the ICPSR program at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, a prestigious opportunity competed by thousands of students annually. At Ann Arbor I took two classes on econometrics titledMaximum Likelihood EstimationandTime Series, two courses that collaborated greatly with my self-taught progress in the field. More importantly, these two courses built on top of what I studied for my ACCA exams, and introduced me to utilize my learnt knowledge to practice and case studies. Furthermore, this program also allowed me group exercises that included members who took their study opportunity seriously, paying close attention to the accuracy of the data and responsible for their report. I was very satisfied with what I had gained academically from this experience, as it had provided me with the next step in my independent path to become an accountant.
While striving for academic excellence, I have always held and lived by the belief that if you have gained a chance to do something, you should cherish it, do it to the best of your ability, and do it right. Living up to that motto, I maintained a high GPA and participated in various research projects that rounded my academic abilities; at the same time was nominated and awarded several collegial and national level awards such as the National College Student Mathematical Contest Excellence Award. At the same time, I wanted to gain practical experience and insights into the real workings of the world, prompting me to accept an internship opportunity at Pricewater Cooper, one of the most reputable accounting firms in the world. While there I was responsible for the research and investigation duties of audits as well as the drafting, completion and distribution of annual audit reports in English and Mandarin. With my knowledge basis gained from my ACCA exam preparations, I found that I could complete most tasks deemed difficult by other interns to be relatively easy. Simultaneously, however, I found several tasks to be very difficult, attributing to my lack of a dedicated systemic education in accounting. With hard work and dedication following that motto, I completed every task to the best of my ability, and eventually earned commendations from my supervisor and managers. By the end of the internship, I was offered a full time position upon graduation from college, an offer I still have this day.
Meanwhile, since most of my peers have also entered their final year of college and are now partaking in various internships, working across the globe at many different types of firms or businesses; speaking with them and listening to their endeavours my horizons opened greatly. When one of my friends is involved in an internal investigation into afraud case as a part of an ongoing fraud investigation in Guangzhou, another was interning at a fortune 500 company in London, experiencing English culture. They had diverse experiences and an even broader range of mentalities, but they all had something in common, they were systemically educated and professional accountants.
With a systemic education, I will be able make my education whole and gain a comprehensive set of accounting knowledge from one of the best accounting programs in the world. At the same time, since accounting is purely artificial, it can be influenced and manipulated with changes in the economy or taxation, requiring accountants who are sensitive to changes in these areas. Furthermore, accountancy is a skill that is sharpened by constant practice, and diligence in the field is required for knowing how to resolve potential issues. That is another reason I want to attend a graduate program in accountancy, as I seek methods of solving the issue rather than simply learning the theories behind it.
Accountants are needed everywhere, from colossal international enterprises to the small businesses that form the backbone of many economies, from London, Hong Kong and New York to the small towns in rural areas of India. Upon earning my degree, I will start my accountancy career at an internationally recognized firm such as Ernst & Young LLP, and experience the different opportunities that each type of accountant position offers.
I have loved the accountant profession since I was little, from my mother’s influence to my own experiences to the conversations I shared with my accountant peers. I felt that I no longer wanted to be an accountant because I was good at it, as I now wanted to experience the endless potential career possibilities that it offered. I am prepared to take the next step in becoming a professional accountant.
